ASHLEY GRAPPE NAMED TECH'S FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns junior guard Ashley Grappe (Benton, Ark.) as this week's 14th Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2008-09 school year.

Grappe, who is the third Golden Sun Basketball player to be honored this season, earns this week's honor after helping the 20th-ranked Golden Suns post a 1-1 record the past week. Tech, who is 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the GSC, opened the week with a 65-51 win over Ouachita Baptist, before suffering a 59-33 loss at Delta State. The DSU loss snapped Tech's season-long seven-game winning streak. In the win over OBU, Grappe dished out five assists and had three steals in 36 minutes and then scored five points, had two assists and two steals against Delta State. On the season, Grappe, who is a three-year letterwinner and three-year starter, is averaging 5.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game and is shooting 37 percent from the field and 78 percent at the free throw line. On the season, Grappe is second in the league in both assists and steals and is fourth in assist/turnover ratio at 1.7.

In her career at Tech, Grappe has played in 74 games and made 73 starts. She is averaging 7.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game and is a career 46 percent shooter from the field and a career 75 percent free shooter. She recently moved into seventh place on the school's assist chart with 332 and is nearing the Top 10 in career steals and is nearing 600 career points. In her career, she has a 1.4 assist/turnover ratio.

The following is a question and answer segment to help get to know this successful Tech student-athlete:

Why did you ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Ashley Grappe: I came to Tech because of the women's basketball program. I wanted to be a part of bringing back the dominant program that is once was.

Outside of athletics, what is your favorite thing about college life?
AG: I like being part of a basketball team and hanging out with all my teammates.

What is your favorite type of music/group?
AG: I like all different kinds of music!

What do you consider your hobby?
AG: My IPod. I am always downloading new songs (from ITunes, of course) and uploading them to my IPod.

What sport other than basketball do you like to wat
ch or would you like to play the most?
AG: I love watching football. My favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys.

Who is one person that has had the biggest impact on your life?
AG: Of course, my family. They've been a huge support through everything.


What is your most memorable moment as a Tech athlete?
AG: When we win the conference this season.

What would you do on your dream vacation?
AG: I would lay out on the beach and relax all day!!

What is your major at Tech?
AG: I am a wellness science major.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
AG: I plan on getting my masters degree here at Tech and hopefully become a Graduate Assistant for the basketball team.

Do you have a pet? What is its name?
AG: Sophie. She's the smartest dog in the world.


How many times a day do you find yourself checking Facebook?
AG: I never check facebook.

What's been the most rewarding class you have had while being at Tech?
AG: Passing Human Anatomy. It was a pretty tough class.

What are your goals for this season?
AG: I hope our team continues to get better and we do whatever it takes to win basketball games.
