JUSTIN RAY NAMED TECH MALE
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has
named senior wide receiver Justin Ray (Benton,
Ark.)
as this week's sixth male student-athlete of the week.
Ray,
who is a member of the Wonder Boys Football team, earns
this week's honor catching a season-high seven passes
for 110 yards in the Wonder Boys 45-24 loss on Family
Day last Saturday to No. 2 ranked North Alabama. Ray was
one of two Wonder Boys to reach 100 yards in receiving
as senior receiver Tracey Stiger (Russellville,
Ark.) caught a school record 13 passes for 121 yards
against the Lions. On the season, Ray has caught 24
passes for 346 yards (14.4 yards/reception) and has
caught one touchdown pass, while he has carried the ball
12 times for 83 yards and scored a touchdown on a 7-yard
run against Central Missouri.
In his career, Ray, who was named a Second-Team All-GSC
selection as a quarterback last season, has played in 32
games and made 19 starts, including starting 14
consecutive games heading into this Saturday's game at
Southern Arkansas. For his career, he has caught 35
passes for 517 yards and is averaging 14.8 yards per
reception. In addition, he has carried the ball 222
times for 1,293 yards (5.8 yards/carry) and has scored
14 career touchdowns. Along with playing receiver, Ray
has also spent time as a quarterback during his career
and as a quarterback, he is 151-for-300 in his career
for 1,742 yards and has tossed 14 touchdowns and 10
interceptions. He ranks 13th on the school's career
total offense list with 3,035 yards and over the final
three games of last season, Ray accounted for 1,160
yards of total offense (386.7 yards per game), including
gaining 479 yards of total offense against Southern
Arkansas. Along with those accomplishments, Ray also
threw five touchdown passes last season against Ouachita
Baptist and scored four rushing touchdowns in Tech's
2007 season finale against Harding.

Why did you
ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Justin Ray: It felt like the right
place to be when I came for my visit.
Outside of athletics, what is your favorite
thing about college life?
JR: I like the freedom.
What is your favorite type of music/group?
JR: I love classic rock music.
What do you consider your hobby?
JR: My hobby is playing golf.
What sport other than football do you like
to watch or would you like to play the most?
JR: I guess I would like to play either
tennis or golf.
Who is one person that has had the biggest
impact on your life?
JR: My parents have made the biggest
impact.
What is your most memorable moment as a Tech
athlete?
JR: I would have to say, coming in at
quarterback my freshman year against UCA in
the second half. In that game, I rushed and
passed for over 100 yards. It was my first
time on the field in a college game.
What would you do on your dream vacation?
JR: I would like to backpack through Europe
with endless amount of money.
What is your major at Tech?
JR: I'm majoring in Speech Communications.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
JR: I am going to train for the professional
combines and then I'd like to coach.
Do you have a pet?
JR: No pets.
How many times a day do you find yourself
checking facebook?
JR: I check it at least once a day.
What's been the most rewarding class you
have had while being at Tech?
JR: My interview practice class. It helped
prepare me for job interviews.
What are your goals for this season?
JR: I would like to win out and make the
NCAA Division II Playoffs. |
