KARYLE WHITLEY NAMED TECH MALE
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has
named junior pitcher Karyle Whitley (Tucson,
Ariz.)
as this week's Male Student-Athlete of the Week.
Whitley,
who is member of the Wonder Boys Baseball team, earns
this week's honor, after pitching back-to-back
nine-inning complete games to help the Wonder Boys open
GSC play with a 7-2 mark heading into this weekend's
series at fifth-ranked Southern Arkansas. Over his last
two starts and three appearances, Whitley has a 2-0
record and an 0.47 earned run average. Over those three
appearances, he has pitched two complete games and in 19
innings of work, he has allowed 14 hits and one earned
run, while walking four and striking out 13. In
addition, opposing hitters are batting .203 against
Whitley in this span. In his last outing, Whitley
pitched a complete-game six-hitter in Tech's 8-1 win
over Christian Brothers. Against CBU, Whitley allowed
just an unearned run, while walking two and striking out
seven.
On the season, Whitley, who is a transfer Pima [AZ]
Junior College, has compiled a 4-4 record and a 4.37
ERA. He has made 11 appearances and nine starts and has
also picked up a save. He leads the team in innings
pitched (57.2) and strikeouts (48). In 57.2 innings of
work, Whitley has allowed 63 hits and 38 runs (28 earned
runs) and has walked just 21 hitters.

Why did you
ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Karyle Whitley: I got a good
opportunity to play baseball with a good
scholarship.
Outside of athletics, what is your favorite
thing about college life?
KW: I like to beat my roomate in Fifa 09
everyday.
What is your favorite type of music/group?
KW: I like hardcore screamo music (A Day to
Remember) and underground Hip-Hop (Mac
Lethal).
What do you consider your hobby?
KW: Snowboarding and listening to music.
What sport other than baseball do you like
to watch or would you like to play the most?
KW: I like soccer.
Who is one person that has had the biggest
impact on your life?
KW: My mother.
What is your most memorable moment as a Tech
athlete?
KW: Throwing back-to-back nine-inning
complete games.
What would you do on your dream vacation?
KW: I would go to Whistler and snowboard
with my buddies.
What is your major at Tech?
KW: I am a psychology major.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
KW: I would like to play baseball, coach or
get a job as a sports psychologist.
Do you have a pet?
KW: I have a cat named Thor.
How many times a day do you find yourself
checking facebook?
KW: I am on it all the time - 24/7.
What's been the most rewarding class you
have had while being at Tech?
KW: My coaching theory class, because I
passed it.
What are your goals for this season?
KW: Hopefully, to make first or second-team
All-Conference and help Tech get through the
Conference Tournament. Next year, I want to
be one of the pitchers to look out for in
the GSC. |
