KAYLA ALLISON NAMED TECH'S FEMALE ATHLETE
OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns senior setter
Kayla Allison (Tulsa, Okla.) as this week's
fifth Female
Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2008-09 school year.
Allison,
who is the third Golden Sun volleyball player honored
this season, earns this week's honor after helping Tech
go 2-1 on the week, including opening up Gulf South
Conference play with three-set wins over both Ouachita
Baptist and Southern Arkansas and then falling in five
sets last Friday to North Alabama. For the week, Allison
recorded 10 kills, 12 digs, hit .429 and had 99 set
assists, including 43 assists in the match against North
Alabama. Earlier this season, Allison achieved a
milestone as she became the school's all-time leader in
set assists with her 16 assists in a match against Missouri S&T at
Southwest Baptist Bearcat Challenge. Allison bettered
the previous assist mark of 4,218 set by former Golden Suns
Kristen Scroggins from 1997-00. On the season,
Allison has recorded 40 kills, 418 assists, 75 digs and
16 blocks, while hitting .279. In her career, she has
recorded 4,555 assists and is seven digs shy of 1,000 in
her career.
She enters her senior campaign
having been named a three-time All-GSC West Division
selection, a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District VI honoree, a two-time member of the GSC
All-Academic Volleyball team and a three-time GSC
Academic Honor Roll member.
The following is a question and answer segment to help
get to know this successful Tech student-athlete:
|
Why did you
ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Kayla Allison: It felt like a good
fit. I liked the volleyball girls, the
campus, the facilities. I prayed about it
and felt like it was where I was supposed to
be.
Outside of athletics, what is your favorite
thing about college life?
KA: I love my campus ministry, Tech
Fellowship. I've made some really close
friends and have really grown in my
relationship with Christ.
What is your favorite type of music/group?
KA: I listen to praise and worship music. I
like Christian bands like Christ for the
Nations, David Crowder Band and Toby Mac.
What do you consider your hobby?
KA: I don't really have time for a hobby. I
would say volleyball is my hobby, but its
more than that, it is a passion.
What sport other than volleyball do you like
to watch or would you like to play the most?
KA: I don't really like watching sports. I
would rather be out there participating. If
I was going to play another sport, it would
be softball. I used to play and I miss it
sometimes.
Who is one person that has had the biggest
impact on your life?
KA: Jesus Christ. He impacts my life
everyday in the choices I make. I am so
blessed to be able to have this opportunity
to play the sport of that I love. I hope
that I never take that for granted.
What
is your most memorable moment as a Tech
athlete?
KA: In 2006, we went to Hawai'i. It was the
first time I'd ever been there and it was
amazing. That's something I will treasure
forever.
What would you do on your dream vacation?
KA: I'd like to go somewhere I have never
been. I'd like to go on a shopping spree and
relax in a spa.
What is your major at Tech?
KA: I'm a nursing major.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
KA: After graduation, I will probably move
back home to Tulsa to be closer to home. I'm
most likely going to work as an RN in the
labor and delivery unit.
Do you have a pet?
KA: My mom has a miniature pincher named
Shemaiah.
How many times a day do you find yourself
checking Facebook?
KA: I check it at least two or three times a
day.
What's been the most rewarding class you
have had while being at Tech?
KA: I really enjoyed ACLS (Advanced
Cardiovascular Life Support). It was only
five weeks, but I feel like I really learned
a lot.
What are your goals for this season?
KA: This is going to our best season ever!!
We plan to win a national championship! |
