KAYLA WALDRUP NAMED TECH'S FEMALE ATHLETE
OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns senior cross country
runner Kayla Waldrup (El Dorado, Ark.) as this
week's ninth Female
Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2008-09 school year.
Waldrup
earns this week's after finishing in 19th place at this
year's Gulf South Conference Championship Meet in
Hoover, Ala., on Oct. 24. The 19th place finish earned
Waldrup, one of Tech's two senior runners, Second-Team
All-GSC honors. She ran the 5,000-meter Veteran's Park
Course in Hoover in a time of 20:09.87. Her 19th-place finish helped Tech
finish third overall at this year's GSC Meet, the team's
highest finish since finishing third at the 2003 GSC
Meet.
In her four-year Tech career,
Waldrup has had eight Top 20 finishes, including four
this season. In addition, ran a career-best 5K time of
19:35.1 at this season's Missouri Southern Stampede.
Waldrup and her Golden Sun teammates return to action on
Saturday, Nov. 8 when they compete at NCAA Division II
South Regional Meet in Searcy, Ark.
The following is a question and answer segment to help
get to know this successful Tech student-athlete:
|
Why did you
ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Kayla Waldrup: Well, the No. 1 reason was
Tech is three hours away from my hometown,
El Dorado, Ark., and the No. 2 reason was
the scholarship I received for cross
country.
Outside of athletics, what is your favorite
thing about college life?
KW: The freedom that comes with being in
college.
What is your favorite type of music/group?
KW: Anything but classical or hard rock.
What do you consider your hobby?
KW: I love taking pictures and scrapbooking.
What sport other than cross country do you like
to watch or would you like to play the most?

impact on your life?
KW: My dad. He has supported me with
everything I've done and everything I am
doing.
What

athlete?
KW: Finally getting 2nd-Team All-Conference
honors this season and helping our team
finish third at the conference meet (the
highest we've finished since I've been
here.).
What would you do on your dream vacation?
KW: I would like to go somewhere in Europe.
What is your major at Tech?
KW: I am a fitness and wellness major
(Wellness Science).

have had while being at Tech?
KW: I really liked Rhythmic Aerobics. It
definitely taught me how to stretch more
properly and what ways to work out
differently. In addition, it was a fun
class, too!
What are your goals for this season?
KW: Well, this is my last season with Tech
Cross Country and with one meet left, I'm
hoping to run a fast enough time to help the
team place high at Regionals. |
