LAITHE MASSEY NAMED TECH MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has named sophomore guard Laithe Massey (Heber Springs, Ark.) as this week's Male Student-Athlete of the Week.

Massey, who is a member of the Wonder Boys Basketball team, earns this week's honor after helping the Wonder Boys go 2-1 so far in the month of February. Tech, who is 16-7 overall and 6-4 in the GSC, opened the month with a 78-56 home win over Southern Arkansas and then posted an 80-70 win last Thursday over Henderson State, before suffering a 94-67 loss this past Saturday at Harding. Over the past three games, Massey is averaging 7.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game and is shooting 67 percent from the field. In the win over HSU, Massey scored 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had five assists. Over his last three games, he has had 16 assists and 19 rebounds. On the season, Massey is averaging 5.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game and is shooting 53 percent from the field and 65 percent at the free throw line. In GSC play, Massey is averaging 5.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He has played in 23 games and has made 13 starts and has had nine games with at least four assists and 14 games with at least five rebounds. 

In his career as a Wonder Boy, Massey, who played for former Wonder Boy Eric Fleming at Heber Springs High School, has scored 156 points and pulled down 194 career rebounds. In addition, he has dished out 119 assists and picked up 60 career steals in 51 career games. He is a career 48 percent shooter from the field and has reached double figures in scoring in two games.

Why did you ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Laithe Massey: To play basketball and get an education at a great institution.

Outside of athletics, what is your favorite thing about college life?
LM: I like to hang out with my friends and teammates.

What is your favorite type of music/group?
LM: I like rap and hip-hop music.

What do you consider your hobby?
LM: Basketball is my hobby.

What sport other than basketball do you like to watch or would you like to play the most?
LM: I like to watch football.

Who is one person that has had the biggest impact on your life?
LM: My mom and my high school basketball coach.

What is your most memorable moment as a Tech athlete?
LM: When we won our first-ever GSC Tournament game last season against Alabama-Huntsville.

What would you do on your dream vacation?
LM: I would like to go to Hawaii.

What is your major at Tech?
LM: I am a health and physical education major.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
LM: I would like to play basketball after college, but after I done playing basketball, I want to become a coach.

Do you have a pet?
LM: I have two dogs, Lamar and Lizzie.

How many times a day do you find yourself checking facebook?
LM: I probably check once a day or once every other day, depends on my schedule.

What's been the most rewarding class you have had while being at Tech?
LM: Methods of Teaching Team Activities with Mrs. Roberson.

What are your goals for this season?
LM: I would like for our team to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
