LAURA FARNEY NAMED TECH'S FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns freshman outside hitter Laura Farney (Peoria, Ill.) as this week's seventh Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2008-09 school year.

Farney, who is the fifth Golden Sun volleyball player honored this season, earns this week's honor after helping Tech go 3-0 last week, including posting a three-set win at Arkansas-Monticello last Thursday in the GSC "Match of the Week."  For the week, Farney had 31 kills and had a team-high hitting percentage of .456, including collecting 15 kills in 34 attempts in Tech’s five-set win last Saturday over St. Leo and added nine kills in Tech’s GSC “Match of the Week” against UAM enroute to earning the GSC West Division Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week honor. In addition, she also notched seven block assists for the week.

For the season, Farney, who is one of four freshmen that are in Tech's playing rotation this season, has played in 68 of Tech's 80 sets and has recorded 147 kills (2.16 kps), 42 digs (0.62 dps), 31 total blocks, including five solo blocks and is hitting .270, which is fifth-best among Tech's regulars. In GSC play, Farney, who attended Peoria Christian High School, has recorded 41 kills (2.28 kps) and is hitting .347. She has had five double-digit kill matches, including recording a career-high 15 kills against St. Leo.
