RACHEL BRAZELL NAMED TECH'S FEMALE ATHLETE
OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns senior guard
Rachel Brazell (Mansfield, Texas) as this
week's 13th Female
Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2008-09 school year.
Brazell,
who is the second Golden Sun Basketball player to be
honored this season, earns this week's honor
after helping the 21st-ranked Golden Suns start Gulf
South Conference play with a 3-0 record following last
Saturday's 69-59 home win over Harding. The win over
Harding was Tech's sixth consecutive victory of the
season and its 13th overall on the year. For the week,
Brazell, who transferred to Tech from American
University before the beginning of last season, scored
10 points and pulled down eight rebounds, including
scoring six points in the win over Harding. In addition,
she shot 40 percent from the 3-point line and 80 percent
from the free throw line in Tech's two wins last week.
On the season, Brazell, is one of the team's four
seniors, is averaging 5.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per
game and is shooting 35 percent from the field, 33
percent from the 3-point line and 79 percent at the foul
line. She started the first 10 games of the season for
the Golden Suns, but has since become Tech's go-to
player off the bench. She has scored 34 points off the
bench in the last six games, including scoring 17 points
in three GSC contests.
In her career at Tech, Brazell, who injured her knee in
the sixth game last season and sat out as a redshirt in
2007-08, has scored 152 points (6.9 ppg) and has pulled
down 51 rebounds and dished out 32 assists in 26 career
games. She is a career 39 percent shooter from the field
and has made 51 career three-pointers and is a career 82
percent free throw shooter. She has reached double
figures six times in her career, including three times
this season.
