TECH NAMES TONY SANCHEZ MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has named Wonder Boy third baseman Tony Sanchez (Mesquite, Texas) as this week's Male Athlete of the Week.

Sanchez is currently amidst one of the most stellar hitting performances of anyone who has ever played the game of baseball at any level. In his past six games, Sanchez is a whopping 16 for 25 (.640 avg.) with eight runs scored, five RBIs, three doubles, and two homeruns. Sanchez currently leads all Wonder Boy hitters with a fairy tale average of .524.

At a time during the hitting clinic that Sanchez has been portraying, he broke Gulf South Conference and school records for the most consecutive at bats with a base hit, doing it 11 straight times. His streak extended from Feb. 10 against Lyon through Feb. 15 against Northwest Missouri State. Sanchez also started the season on a 10-game hitting streak. For the season, Sanchez is 22 of 42 at the plate with 11 runs, seven doubles, two homeruns and six RBIs.

The following is a question and answer segment to help get to know this successful Tech student-athlete:

Why did you ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Tony Sanchez: Out of all the colleges that I visited, I got the best feeling from the coaches here at Tech. Tech also offered me the best scholarship out of all the schools and that helped my parents out financially.

Outside of athletics, what is your favorite thing about college life?
TS: Hanging out with the teammates and friends.

What is your favorite type of music/group?
TS: Rap, Hip-Hop, and R&B

What do you consider your hobby?
TS: Listening to music and dancing.

What sport other than baseball do you like to watch or would you like to play the most?
TS: I like to watch football because it's exciting to watch and it gives me a reason to yell at the TV. My favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys.

Who is one person that has had the biggest impact on your life?
TS: My dad, because he has taught me to work hard for what you got and to be thankful for it and never take it for granted.

What is your most memorable moment as a Tech athlete?
TS: Setting a GSC and Arkansas Tech University record of 11 consecutive at-bats with hits.

What would you do on your dream vacation?
TS: Maybe go on a really nice cruise and visit different places outside of the United States. I've never been on a cruise or visited anywhere outside the country so I think it would be an awesome vacation.

What is your major at Tech?
TS: Wellness/Science

What do you plan to do after graduation?
TS: I'm still unsure at this point.

Do you have a pet?
AG: Yes, it's a yellow lab and her name is Izzy.

How many times a day do you find yourself checking facebook?
TS: Maybe once a day.

What's the most rewarding class you have had while being at Tech?
TS: I'd say Rhythmic Aerobics, it made me sweat almost every time I went and I had a lot of fun taking that class.

What are your goals for this season?
TS: My goal for this season is to do whatever I can do to help my team make it to Montgomery, Alabama.
