GOLDEN SUNS FINISH SECOND AT ITS SECOND-ANNUAL TECH
TWILIGHT RUN; UALR SWEEPS BOTH TEAM TITLES
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech Women’s Cross Country opened its 2008
season here Friday evening by finishing second out of
nine teams at its Second-Annual Tech Twilight Run held
on the grounds surrounding Tucker Coliseum.
Tech, who finished fifth in the inaugural event last
season, was boasted by two of its runners finishing in
the Top 10, including junior Melissa Pollreis
(Gravette, Ark.) running the 2-mile course in a time of
12:15 to finish in fourth place, to help the Golden Suns
finish second.
Golden Suns Head Coach Tom Aspel said he was
happy with the way his team performed.
“I was very happy with the way our girls ran tonight,
they got out there and performed well,” Aspel said. “The
meet was a very good one and the weather cooperated as
things cooled off a bit.”
In addition to featuring nine women’s teams, the meet
also had seven men’s teams. The men’s teams had to run
four miles.
Tech scored 59 points to finish one point in front of
third-place finisher Arkansas State (60 points).
Arkansas-Little Rock won the team title for the second
straight season as the Lady Trojans scored 39 points.
Hendrix finished fourth with 104 points and was followed
by Central Arkansas (113 points), Memphis (152 points),
Henderson State (169 points), Arkansas-Monticello (239
points) and University of Ozarks (256 points).
Leading the way for Tech was Pollreis as she ran a time
of 12:15 to finish in fourth place. In addition to
Pollreis, senior Kayla Waldrup (El Dorado, Ark.)
ran a time of 12:20 to finish in seventh place and
sophomore Lauren Karnitz (DeSoto, Kan.) ran a
time of 12:32 to finish in 15th place. Senior Brianna
Greene (Harrison, Ark.) finished one second behind
Karnitz (12:33) to finish in 16th place and junior
Michelle Pollreis (Gravette, Ark.) ran the course in
12:38 to finish in 17th place. The final Tech finisher
was sophomore Erica Wardlaw (Eureka Springs,
Ark.), who ran the 2-miles in as time of 13:03 to finish
in 23rd place.
“I was really pleased with the way Kayla (Waldrup) ran
tonight, she has had a good few weeks of practice,”
Aspel added.
UALR’s Whitney Kerth was the top women’s finisher as she
ran the course in a record-tying 11:07 to take home the
top prize. At last season’s meet, UALR’s Kata Lovrantova
ran a time of 11:07 to take home first place honors.
Hendrix’s Lolly Plummer finished second with a time of
11:53 and UALR’s Ashley Tiner finished third after
running a time of 12:05.
The men’s race was also won by UALR for the second
consecutive season as the Trojans scored 25 points to
easily outdistance second-place finisher Central
Arkansas (68 points) and third-place finisher Memphis
(79 points). UALR’s Aaron Batey ran a course record time
of 19:58 to take home first place honors.
University of Ozarks finished fourth as they scored 131
points and were followed by Arkansas State (133 points),
Henderson State (133 points) and Hendrix (136 points).
