DANNY MARTIN NAMED AN ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC
ALL-DISTRICT VI COLLEGE DIVISION FOOTBALL TEAM SELECTION

        RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech junior linebacker Danny Martin (Tulsa, Okla.) has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District VI College Division Football Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Martin becomes the 20th different Wonder Boy football player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District VI honors and the first since Jonathan Webster and Zach Hall were selected in 2007. Webster was a first team honoree in 2007 and Hall earned second team honors.

In order to be eligible for the Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school.

          He was one of three Gulf South Conference players represented on the District VI College Division teams. Joining Martin on this year’s team was Harding offensive lineman James Kee and Arkansas-Monticello wide receiver Joseph Lockwood.

          Martin, who was a member of the 2008 GSC All-Academic Football Team and is a two-time member of the Academic Honor Roll, carries a 3.77 cumulative grade point average mechanical engineering. On the season, Martin has played in and started all nine games for the Wonder Boys and has recorded 26 total tackles, including 12 solo stops and has had 5.5 tackles for 31 yards in losses and has recorded 1.5 quarterback sacks. In addition, Martin, who has started 24 consecutive games dating to the 2007 season, has also had three quarterback hurries and serves as one of Tech’s three defensive captains. In his career, Martin has played in 29 games and has recorded 123 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and has forced and recovered three fumbles and has blocked two kicks heading into Tech’s regular season finale on Saturday at Harding.

With his selection, Martin becomes the school’s 30th all-time CoSIDA Academic All-District VI football selection and he now eligible for Academic All-American honors after being a first-team All-District selection.

CoSIDA members in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas were responsible for the voting.
