ANA MORALES NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-GSC WOMEN'S GOLF
SELECTION
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama
–
Arkansas
Tech’s Ana Morales has been named a First-Team
All-Gulf South Conference Women’s Golf selection on
Friday by the league office.
Morales becomes the second Golden Sun to earn First-Team
honors in women’s golf as Jamie Moore was honored
last season by the league.
The women’s golf coaches in the league voted for the
team and the coaches weren’t allowed to vote for their
own players.
Henderson State, Montevallo, West Florida and West
Georgia each collected two honorees on one of the two
All-GSC squads. West Florida, who is the two-time
defending GSC Champions and the No. 12 team in NCAA
Division II, leads the way with two First-Team
performers, while Henderson State and Montevallo had a
player named to both the first and second teams and West
Georgia had two Second-Team selections.
In the individual awards given out by the league,
Henderson State’s Jenna Chadwick and West Florida’s
Bhavna Shetty were named Co-GSC Players of the Year,
while Shetty was named to the league’s Freshman of the
Year. West Florida’s Robin Cook-Dezarn was named the GSC
Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year.
Morales,
a freshman from Bogota, Columbia, earns her first team
honor after leading the way for Tech with a team-best
83.5 scoring average in 15 rounds of golf and eight
tournaments. On the season, Morales has had six Top 10
finishes, including three tournament runner-ups and has
finished in the Top 15 in all eight of her tournaments.
Shot a season-best 160 enroute to a second-place finish
at the Lady Bison Fall Classic and had a season-best
round of 77 in the first round of this week’s Natural
State Classic. In 15 rounds of golf, Morales has had
five rounds in the 70s and helped lead Tech to team
titles at both the Rhodes College Fall Classic in
Tunica, Miss., and at the UAFS Lady Lions Spring Classic
in Fort Smith, Ark.
Morales is joined on the All-GSC First-Team by Chadwick,
Shetty, Montevallo’s Morgan Bell and West Florida’s
Natalie Espinosa.
Meanwhile, the Second-Team included Henderson State’s
Meredith Mosel, Montevallo’s Emily Gibson and West
Georgia teammates, Sarah Ross and Regan Freville.
Morales and the rest of the Golden
Suns will return to action this weekend when they
compete at the 2008 GSC Golf Championships at the Hot
Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark. The meet will
get underway with 18 holes on Sunday, April 20 and
conclude with another 18 holes on Monday, April 21. Last
season, Tech had a school-best second-place finish at
the GSC Championships.
