GOLDEN SUNS PLACE TWO ON ALL-GSC WOMEN'S GOLF TEAMS; DANIELLE LEWIS NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-GSC HONOREE

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama Arkansas Tech senior Danielle Lewis (Toronto, Ont.) and sophomore Kyla McIsaac (Kentville, Nova Scotia) have been named to the 2009 All-Gulf South Conference Women’s Golf Teams as selected by the league’s coaches.

Lewis was named a First-Team selection, while McIsaac was named to the Second-Team.

With her first team selection, Lewis now becomes the third Golden Sun to earn First-Team All-GSC honors in the program’s history and she also becomes the program’s first-ever two-time All-GSC honoree as she was named a Second-Team selection in 2007. Tech’s prior two first team All-GSC selections were Jamie Moore in 2007 and sophomore Ana Morales (Bogota, Colombia) in 2008.

The women’s golf coaches in the league voted for the team and the coaches weren’t allowed to vote for their own players.

West Florida, the three-time defending GSC Champions, leads the way with three honorees, while Tech and Harding each had two players selected. Henderson State, Montevallo and West Georgia all had one player selected.

In the individual awards given out by the league, West Florida’s Bhavna Shetty repeated as the GSC Player of the Year after sharing the honor last season with Henderson State’s Jenna Chadwick. Montevallo’s Emma Breen was named the league’s Freshman of the Year, while the Coach of the Year winner will be announced later this week.

Lewis earns her first team honor after leading the way for the Tech with a team-best 84.4 scoring average in 18 rounds of golf and nine tournaments. On the season, Lewis had five Top 10 finishes, including taking home individual medalist honors at the UAM Weevil Classic after shooting a 167. She shot a season-best 161 enroute to finishing tied for fifth at the UWF/Bubba Watson Classic and helped lead Tech to team titles at the UAFS Spring Classic in Fort Smith, Ark., the UAM Weevil Classic in Pine Bluff, Ark., and the SAU Mulerider Invitational in Magnolia, Ark. She closed out her Tech career tied for the third-best career scoring average (85.9/6,271 strokes/73 rounds) with Carissa Sullivan (2003-07) in the program’s history.

She is joined on the All-GSC First-Team by Chadwick, Harding senior Brandi Watkins, Montevallo’s Emily Gibson and West Georgia sophomore Sarah Ross.

McIsaac earns second team honors after shooting an 86.3 average in 18 rounds of golf and nine tournaments this season for the Golden Suns. On the season, McIsaac had four Top 10 finishes, including taking home individual medalist honors after firing a season-low total of 165 at the SAU Mulerider Invitational.  She helped lead Tech to team titles at the UAFS Spring Classic in Fort Smith, Ark., the UAM Weevil Classic in Pine Bluff, Ark., and the SAU Mulerider Invitational in Magnolia, Ark.

She is joined on the All-GSC Second-Team by Shetty, Harding senior Natalie Gay, West Florida junior Natalie Espinosa and West Florida junior Rachel Williams.
