GOLDEN SUNS TENNIS PERFORMS WELL AT ITS SECOND-ANNUAL
SLAM TOURNAMENT
RUSSELLVILLE,
Arkansas –
The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns Tennis team had several
outstanding performances in its Second-Annual Tech
Tennis Slam Tournament held at the Chartwells Tennis
Complex on the Tech campus this weekend. Seven teams
participated in the tournament.
Seniors Kristen Brown (Winona, Texas), Anna
Carson (Fort Smith, Ark.) and sophomore Jessica
James (Valley Springs, Ark.) each went 2-1 in the
two day event, advancing to the semifinals of their
respective flights.
“Collectively, I was pleased with the performances,”
Golden Suns Tennis Head Coach Abby Davis said.
“Two of our double teams are new this season and they
needed experience playing together. I thought Anna
(Carson) played very hard. She played great defense
against some tough competition.
“It was a good start to the season for our team and
we’ll go back to work on Monday.”
Freshman Brittany Turner (Pearcy, Ark.) went 1-1
in the tournament before falling in semifinals of Flight
1 Singles, while sophomore Saki Matsuoka
(Saitama, Japan), the reigning GSC Freshman of the Year,
went 2-2 and advanced to the finals of the Flight 1
Singles consolation bracket. Sophomore Michelle Yu
(Flower Mound, Texas) and freshman Ashley Baird
(Cabot, Ark.) each went 0-2 in singles play for the
Golden Suns.
In doubles competition, Carson and Matsuoka advanced to
the semifinals of Flight 1 and the tandem of Brown and
Turner went 1-2, falling in the quarterfinals of the
Flight 1 consolation bracket, while Yu and James
partnered up to advance to the semifinals of Flight 2.
The Golden Suns will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3
when they travel to Clarksville to face University of
Ozarks. The match will begin at 3 p.m.
