GOLDEN SUNS TENNIS CLOSES OUT FALL SEASON AT
LAST WEEKEND'S COLLIN COLLEGE OPEN

Arkansas Tech Golden Suns Tennis wrapped up its 2009
fall schedule last weekend at the 21st-Annual Collin
College Fall Open in Plano, Texas.
For Tech, the furthest the Golden Suns got in any flight
was to the semifinals. On the singles side, most of the
players fell in the first round, except for junior
Saki Matsuoka (Saitama, Japan) and freshman Nina
Greenway (Monticello, Ark.). Matsuoka, the two-time
All-GSC performer, lost in the quarterfinals of Flight 1
singles to North Central Texas’ Cimen Soy in a three-set
tiebreaker (6-3, 5-7, 11-9), while Greenway lost in the
semifinals of Flight 5 singles to Dallas Baptist’s Laura
Atkins in a three-set tiebreaker (5-7, 6-0, 10-1).
In other singles action, freshman Emorie Mallow
(Keller, Texas) and junior Michelle Yu (Flower
Mound, Texas) lost in the first round of Flight 2
singles, while freshman Laura Palamino (Irving,
Texas) and Jessica Velasquez (Keller, Texas) lost
in first round of Flight 3. Junior Jessica James
(Lead Hill, Ark.) fell in a third-set tiebreaker in the
first round of Flight 4, while freshman Meagan Childers
(Greenwood, Ark.) and freshman Jenny Yu (Flower
Mound, Texas) fell in the straight sets in the first
round of Flight 6.
Meanwhile, in doubles action, saw three of its
teams go 1-1 and also had two teams advance to the
semifinals in consolation play. Palamino and Jenny Yu
went 1-2 as they lost in the consolation semifinals of
Flight 3, while Childers and Greenway also lost in the
consolation semifinals of Flight 3. In Flight 1,
sophomore Brittany Turner (Pearcy, Ark.) and
Matsuoka lost in the quarterfinals of Flight 1, while
the teams of Velasquez/Mallow and Michelle Yu and James
each lost in the quarterfinals of Flight 2 after winning
their first round matches.
